Funktionsweise
A sodium lamp emits 589 nm monochromatic light; after passing through a polariser it becomes linearly polarised. The polarised beam traverses the sample tube and the plane of polarisation rotates by an angle proportional to the sample's optical activity. The analyser wheel and graduated disc are rotated manually until the darkest/brightest field is observed through the 4× eyepiece; the optical rotation is read from the disc to 0.05° precision via the vernier scale.
