Liquid samples are injected into a combustion furnace containing a high-performance oxidation catalyst. At up to 1100°C, organic carbon is completely oxidized to CO₂ and H₂O; water vapor is removed by a condenser, and CO₂ is quantified by a non-dispersive infrared(NDIR) detector to give TC. Inorganic carbon(IC) is liberated by phosphoric acid, condensed, and measured separately by NDIR to give TIC. TOC = TC − TIC. Carrier gas is high-purity oxygen(≥99.999%).
